What is a Black Jar Honey Contest? Honey is placed in an opaque jar (black jar) so the judge cannot see the color of the honey. Judging is based solely on flavor and aroma. This contest is open to any honey that is produced in Texas. One (1) entry per household\, from the 2026 harvest.\n\n\n\nEach entry will consist of at least 4 ounces of plain honey. Honey will be transferred into the jar if turned into the Extension office or will be immediately placed in the opaque jar if turned in at a Beekeepers Meeting (Central Texas Beekeepers or Colorado County Beekeepers).\n\n\n\nThe deadline is Monday\, September 28th at 9 am\, entries can be dropped off at the Austin County Extension office\, 800 E Wendt St.\, Bellville\, TX 77418. Placements will be awarded to the Top 3 based on flavor and aroma. Certificates will be awarded to the winner. If you turn in your own jars\, they can be picked up from October 12th until October 30th.
